Welcome Praema Suppiah

Praema Suppiah has recently joined Lumino as a Periodontist based at both Lumino the Dentists Botany and Remuera Dental Centre, Auckland. Praema previously worked in Malaysia before moving to New Zealand in 2016.
We caught up with her to ask her a few questions regarding her speciality, her career and life in general.

What made you choose periodontics as a speciality?

When I was working as a general practitioner, I saw many patients who requested teeth extractions and dentures due to periodontal disease. Many didn’t know that periodontal disease can be treated, and were glad when I either treated or referred them for specialist care instead of extracting teeth. I’ve also noted that more people with medical conditions have periodontal issues. As a general practitioner, there was a limit to what I could offer to these patients, so it became natural for me to specialize in this field. I completed Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontology) from University of Otago in 2013. It’s a joy to see patients improve from a very bad state of oral health to achieving a healthy smile; more importantly retain their teeth.

What are your career highlights?

My doctoral thesis clinical study was the 1st of its kind to assess Oral Health Related Quality-of-Life in akylosing spondylitis patients. I have served as the Head for Infection Control Committee (district level) & Department Liaison Officer for MS ISO and accreditation recognition (Malaysian work experience).

How are you finding Lumino?

I’m new to the Lumino family, yet I feel very comfortable and fit in well at the 2 practices I work. Both teams are very friendly and welcoming, together with Andrew Warner and Steven Casci. I’m thrilled to be a part of the team and I’m looking forward to more collaboration and meeting other Lumino members!

Tell us a little about you?

I’m a busy mum and my 2 children mean the world to me. I love cooking for my family and enjoy creating my own fusion recipe with Asian flavours. ‘Health is Wealth’ is my motto, so invest time and effort to achieve it. I’m able to converse in English, Malay and Tamil. To relax I take the opportunity to listen to music, watch a movie, either works as long as I have a coffee in my hand! Since coming to New Zealand my favourite place is Lake Tekapo in summer, it’s beautiful and serene!
